I have found a very minty Hoag "longslide", identical to the gun used in Thief-built on a 70 Series Colt Gold Cup. What a beauty..the work is excellent and the weld is flawless. I replaced the heavy steel trigger with a lightweight plastic trigger just for functionality. here are few pics of some Hoag guns and also James Caan using them in the classic Michael Mann movie, Thief.
VERY cool! I always liked the Hoag longslide after seeing the film "Thief". However if you look carfully at the film (and the pictures above) Caan is actually using a standard Gold Cup for the actual scenes where the weapon is fired and uses a Hoag for for the none firing and close up shots.
ReplyDeleteJust kicking around on the web and found this. I was working for Jim Hoag when the guns for Thief were built. A LOT of guns were built, all in sets of four- two had to fire live ammo, and two modified for blanks, each set in identical configuration. I believe we did build some standard, 5-inch pistols, though I don't recall if they were on Gold Cups or Government models. I do specifically recall the Commanders and the 6" Long Slides we built for the film. Before production, Michael Mann and James Caan dropped by the shop to look at our work. We saw Michael a couple more times, and spoke with him on the phone pretty regularly, as well as his assistant. What they filmed as far as live shooting I can't say, and I have not watched the film again since the early 80s. But I can guarantee you they had 2 live firing Commanders and 2 Long Slide Master Grade pistols at their disposal, and possibly 2 5" guns as well.
